I am Mattéo, a moderator at FCA, drawn to digital marketing and graphic design. My skills were built on Discord, which led me towards web design and community management. What I believe comes down to communication and teaching, as the way to keep a community healthy. Away from the screen, I am taken with nature and beekeeping, where I find my balance.
Professional background
I am Mattéo, a Discord certified moderator with a real interest in running communities. What I lived through on Discord, a platform first taken up by gamers, both inspired me and pushed me professionally towards social media marketing and graphic design. To round out what I knew, I studied web design, digital marketing and community management, going deeper into the areas that matter most to what I do.
Experience and what I have built
Working with the communities of influential brands on Discord has taken me across video games, journalism, entertainment and sport. I have worked with names such as the Game One Discord server, the Ligue 1 Uber Eats championship, the Neopolis community, and on moderating HugoDécrypte's interview with Emmanuel Macron on YouTube. One after another, these let me develop approaches that genuinely bring communities in and help them grow.
Building moderation for the game Neopolis
For two years I had the full confidence of Revolt Games to build community moderation for Neopolis from nothing. I played a significant part in growing the moderation team from fewer than ten people to more than a hundred trained volunteers, working alongside every team on the game. That cross-team work let us improve how moderators were recruited, trained and managed. I also helped set up a Discord server to strengthen communication and knowledge-sharing within the moderation team, which contributed to a game environment that was safe and good to be in.
Work for nature and ecology servers
What drives me comes largely from what I care about outside work, particularly nature and ecology. That led me to create ECO-Naturae, the first server given over to these subjects, where members could talk about the natural world they love. Thanks to how involved our community was and the support of volunteers, we ran events that mattered and worked with associations, as well as interviewing environmentally minded creators. As a volunteer consultant for Cleanwalk.org, I also helped improve their Discord server, finding answers suited to an audience less at home on the platform.
How I work
What I believe professionally rests on this: online communities are valuable places and they need looking after properly. I hold that communication that is open and understanding will often head off trouble, even with the most difficult members. I favour moderation that teaches rather than punishes, so that everyone feels respected and heard.
Away from the screen
Outside work I am taken with things that involve nature and making. Beekeeping sits at the centre of it and gives me a real sense of purpose. Every year I give part of my time to associations working on protecting the environment. Alongside that I occasionally take up fishing, photography and video. All of it keeps me away from screens and keeps me balanced.
